Canon 5D Aerial Drone Over BP Oil Spill

Here is a great set up with a Canon 5D Mark II aerial drone over the Gulf Of Mexico capturing the BP Oil Spill. BTW, calling it a spill sounds too much like they splashed a little milk out of the carton when pouring it over their cereal. Seriously, WTF. Anyway, British Petroleum these corrupt corporate bastards have been controlling who gets access to their man made environmental disaster by paying off boat owners not to take journalists out and by instructing the Coast Guard to do their bidding. They don’t want a repeat of the Exxon boycotts after the Valdez disaster where images of dead birds, fish, seals and otters triggered protest rallies, and consumers returned 10,000 of Exxon’s credit cards to the company. Evidently it’s working which proves BP is better at capping bad press than ruptured oil wells.

While watching this un-American PR clampdown on the media unfold, I kept thinking that his seemed like the perfect time for someone to start using drones to gain coverage of the catastrophe to bring to light the ugly truth of what a disaster of this proportion does to wildlife and the environment. Someone needs to end this out-of-sight-out-of-mind scenario for the public. It turns out that Perspective Aerials had the same idea.

PDN Gear Guide has a write up with a little more info and a link (that doesn’t seem to be working) to the images of the disaster:

We first wrote about perspectiveAerials, operated by former Getty Image Editor Anthony Jacobs, a year ago during a test of the helicopter drone above the High Line in New York City. That test run cleared the way for something even more amazing and far more risky in the Gulf. – PDN Gear Guide

It is great to see drone technology used this way and I hope to see more drone footage from the press in the future. As for British Petroleum, I’d like to steal a line from the late Ashley Morris:

Fuck You, You Fucking Fucks!
