Apps for Filmmaking

Apps ClusterI’ve been watching the development of iPhone and iPad apps that aid in filmmaking for a while now with the intention of writing an article about the best of breed for each category. I have a collection of clapper apps that I’ve been testing to see which one I preferred and I’ve been looking closely at story board, teleprompter and clip editing apps. This morning in my inbox was an article from Ryan Koos talking about his intention of writing the same article for NoFilmSchool and pointing instead to a couple of good articles already written.

FilmmakerIQ posted 22 Filmmaking Apps for the iPad & iPhone. Their list is pretty comprehensive and even had one or two apps that weren’t on my radar yet.

Filmmaker Magazine posted a more esoteric look at what’s on their iPods/iPads, Android phones and computers. One of the items that sticks out to me is the inclusion of Google Docs. My blog partners and I are technically savvy, fairly smart guys who are good at solving problems and we are constantly looking for ways to work collaboratively on documents. We keep coming back to Google Docs where two people can discuss a document and remotely edit it live. It’s just the simplest solution for working remotely on a shared document.

In addition to the sites Koos links too, I have been keeping an eye on HandHeldHollywood. I think a good list of his favorite apps are reflected in the loaded iphone give away. The contest ended but the list of apps is a good one. You’ve also got to love a site that features the RunPee app which tells you when it’s a good time to make a run to the restroom during a movie so you won’t miss anything important. As someone who drinks a lot of coffee, I love this app.
