Canon EOS 60D Reaction Round-Up

August 26, 2010 by Gear, News

So Canon has a new baby, as Michael reported earlier. What’s the reaction been like so far?

Charlie Sorrel at Wired News isn’t very impressed:

“Those looking to upgrade from their 50D should look elsewhere, perhaps to the 7D, as this new camera is more for consumers than enthusiastic amateurs. The magnesium body of the 50D is now plastic, and the 60D uses SD-cards instead of Compact Flash. It also gets a slew of gimmicky image processing features … and the obligatory video capabilities. In fact, video seems to be what this camera was made for … It’s almost like the Canon engineers just picked through a shelf of existing parts and snapped them together like Lego, producing what seems like a pretty sweet-looking camera.”

I rather think a little more work went into it than that, but anyway.

DPReview’s Simon Joinson and Richard Butler have a more considered take on the new model, describing it thus:

“With the 60D Canon has unashamedly moved the X0D range out of the ‘semi pro’ bracket and instead focused on the enthusiast photographer looking to upgrade from their Rebel. As a result, it’s not the obvious continuation of the 30D – 40D – 50D pattern that its naming might suggest. Rather than being a direct upgrade replacement for the 50D, it’s perhaps better understood as a ‘Super Rebel.’”

(They have some good pictures comparing the 60D with its 50D predecessor – the 60D is much smaller.)

Electricpig simply calls it “an 18 megapixel monster”:

“A major addition with the Canon EOS 60D is of course HD video. Canon’s been a trailblazer in this area of the DSLR arms race, and the Canon EOS 60D offers 1080p full HD H.264 video capture at up to 30fps, and 720p at a super smooth 60fps.”

Trusted Reviews has an opinion on the likely upgrade path for existing EOS owners:

“As such the 60D has been aimed a bit lower, making it less a direct upgrade for the 50D but instead a new step-up model for photographers looking for something with more power than a 550D.”

Although previewers got to play with the kit today, they’re not allowed to publish their test shots and videos yet. Canon has uploaded a sample video to YouTube, though:
