PhotoCine Expo Most Talked About HDSLR Event of the Year

September 29, 2010 by Events, News

PhotoCine Expo has come and gone. We predicted it would be the most talked about HDSLR event of the year and our premonition is coming true and the blogosphere is buzzing. You’ve already seen some of the coverage from Jared Abrams and a nice video from Daily Pike that captured the flavor of the show floor set to jazz fusion – great job btw.

One of the benefits of repeatedly hitting myself in the face with a 2×4 producing an event like PhotoCine Expo is that I get to meet talented and interesting people who stand out in their field. One of those guys that I had the pleasure of spending some time with over the weekend was Dan Chung from DSLR News Shooter and Guardian UK fame.

I would have killed to have Dan as a speaker this year but I didn’t have the budget to fly him out from China so I didn’t even bother him about the expo. A few days before the event, I get an email from him saying that he happens to be in town and would be attending the expo. This’s when I realized that the PhotoCine Expo was gathering together pretty much everyone who’s anybody in the HDSLR community into the heart of hollywood to share their experiences, talk about gear and get to know each other. If that’s not a definition of success for an event like this, I don’t know what is.

You can read Dan’s write up about the event here and see more of Dan’s videos on Vimeo.

I’ve just spent an inspirational weekend at the PhotoCine Expo held at the LA Filmschool. I want to thank Michael Britt and his crew for inviting me to what I consider to be the best Photo/Video convergence event in the United States this year. . . .There were amazing presentations by Vincent Laforet, Shane Hurlbut, Rodney Charters, Alex Buono, The Bui brothers, Ami Vitale, Gail Mooney and many others. I’d seen a lot of the work before but on the LA Filmschool’s 2K screen it looked better than ever. – Dan Chung

Cinema5D shooter and PhotoCine Expo speaker Jared Abrams posted his wrap up article on Cinema5D:

Photo Cine Expo was a great experience for Team C5D. We really appreciate all of the comments and feedback from the viewers. The Expo was held at the Los Angeles Film School here in Hollywood. It was a crazy two days, we were lucky enough to get the scoop on the new RRM EVF and also got to check out some other gear ready to finally hit the market. The new 5″ Marshall monitor is kick ass. We were also really impressed with the tiny Que Audio Eng kit. We are going to put that little bad boy up against our Sennheiser MKE 400 this week. We brought in a little extra help from El Skid and Chris Marino. They were the coolest. The best part of the expo was the community that has formed around the cameras. We were sharing gear all weekend long with everyone there. That is what makes this so much fun – Jared Abrams

Tito da Costa from RadRaven really has a handle on covering events for his blog. His write ups are in depth and very enjoyable to read and we are lucky to have him take part in our event. He has posted his Saturday coverage with Sunday to follow shortly. Tito has so many great insights about the individual speakers so be sure to read the whole article. Here are some brief highlights:

So much happening at the same time… Hard to pick what to attend. Something for everyone or any goal . . . .

So, after ending the day on a high, all you could do is feel dizzy with all the information flying around in your head, go home, have a martini (or whatever rocks your boat) and get some rest, cause the party was restarting at 9am, Sunday morning… -RadRaven

Another of my favorite write ups is from Ben Horton’s Nomad blog where he calls PhotoCine Expo the “ComiCon of HDSLR”. Nice.

It’s official, we have our own version of Comicon. The Photo Cine Expo halls were filled with extremely cool gear that I didn’t want to actually touch due to all the drool that the gawkers had left behind, and celebrities (well, what photographers think are celebrities) roaming around the hallways between appearances. . . . .
. . . . the event was a mix of educational talks, keynote speakers, and vendors marketing their products. The talks were great, and I had a hard time deciding where I should spend my time, but I usually went for the educational talks. I certainly learned more than I ever expected to – Ben Horton

I will try to add articles to this page over the next couple of days to tune back in to read more about PhotoCine Expo 2010.
