2010 Retrospective – Articles You Should Have Read Part 3

December 28, 2010 by Opinion, Screenwriting

My mantra of 2010 for photographers moving into DSLR filmmaking has been story. Short 30 seconds stories to feature length stories, everything you shoot should have a beginning a middle and and end.

I can already see the crowd of torch bearing bohemians gathering on the hill with their what about art arguments. Pursuing story is not exclusionary to pursuing artistic film endeavors. It’s in addition to it.All to often poorly crafted films are proffered as artistic endeavors to excuse away the dreadful filmmaking. If you put in the effort to know the filmmaking craft well, anything you pursue thats far afield of mainstream sensibilities will have a quality to it that will lend credibility to you abstractionism. Know your craft well, then forget everything your learned and push the boundaries.

Two pieces I wrote in 2010 for PCN had to do with story. The first is about killing text even though it’s good and the second is a full length TV treatment that I wrote that was pitched for a one hour TV show.
