Real Estate Work for HDSLR Filmmakers

February 1, 2011 by Opinion

With YouTube and Vimeo providing an essentially free way for anyone to post videos online, there’s plenty of opportunities for the aspiring HDLSR filmmaker. Real Estate is a market that’s ripe for the picking, even in the current down economy. Actually, I would say that real estate videos are even more important during the low periods so that good properties can separate themselves from the run down foreclosure and short sale market.

I have the HGTV channel on in the background as I am typing this article and the hostess of a show about how to get the most for your house just said:

Video sharing sites are now a popular place to show off your home. People can take a virtual tour around your house before coming for the open house.

I recently put my house on the market and had planned on posting video of the property but the house sold before I could edit the video and get it up online. My still photo’s probably had something to do with it which proves my point in a round about way. In this market you need to have great visuals which include stills and video. Below is the Flickr set of my house. I shot these by myself with no assistants and without any supplemental lighting over a 24 hour period. Several agents have approached me to shoot for them with a budget of $500 per day. That’s low for architecture or commercial photography but it’s pretty high in the real estate market. Since the expenses are low, I would definitely consider this kind of work to supplement my income. I’m also a design and house junkie so shooting cool houses would be fun.

At the other end of the spectrum is a Youtube ad for a $12 million dollar property. It’s a full on commercial spot for the house. It’s really too bad that they couldn’t find any good actresses in LA. They must not have thrown that rock far enough. Regaurdless, I think there is a great market opportunity for independent DSLR video shooters to pick up work that is generally too small for production companies and ad agencies but can be affordably done alone or with a small crew.
