Not your average Western, not your average financing source.

I got the inside scoop about Sweetpea at a speakeasy in San Francisco this week. My friend, who is attached to the movie, gave me the one line and I was hooked. In the movie Raiders of the Lost Ark the character Marion Ravenwood, played by Karen Allen, is a beautiful, tough, independent woman that is Indiana’s match, not hero decoration. This is my type of female lead. A woman who can drink, swear and fight – a lot like my Sicilian ex girlfriend who to this day is one of my closest friends … or else. Emma Coats, the director of Sweetpea, was kind enough to take a phone call where she works at Pixar and tell me a little bit about her project.

Sweetpea is the story of a professional, female, outlaw who falls in love and has to try and balance her work with her romance, or end up choosing one over the other. It is the film that Miss Coats wishes she could have seen when she was a kid when she was obsessed with Raiders of the Arc. Even though the setting is the old west, the theme is a contemporary one that calls attention to gender rolls in a society where often both partners are professionals.

A veteran director of five films that were made with the generosity of volunteers and saved up lunch money, Miss Coats wanted to bring a higher production value to Sweetpea. That meant finding some money. So she made a video pitch and put it up on Kickstarter. As of this writing the Sweetpea production has about 18 days to raise just over seven thousand dollars. Here at PhotoCine News Michael, Ben and I chose to give up lattes and cappuccinos for two weeks and send that money to Emma and her crew. We’d like to encourage our readers to donate what they can. Not only because we’d like to see the movie get made, but we’d also like to see the growth of independent films utilizing alternate funding methods. Thus protecting original ideas from too much external meddling.

Have a look at the pitch below and then take a minute to throw a few bucks toward the making of a movie that we’d all like to see get made.

Donate to Sweetpea here.
