Watermann Continues to Amaze With One Camera
My friend Greg Watermann, a rock and roll photographer who took it upon himself to do one camera music videos, just emailed me the details of the behind the scenes the new Pitbull video that he shot that we teased you with a few weeks ago.Greg shot “Latinos in Paris” with a 5D and a Zeiss 35/1.4 lens. No rigs, no monitor, no follow-focus. No other crew, no lighting gear, no permits. Every scene was a single take, without a rehearsal. And they used a cell phone for the playback.
To get the last minute of the video Greg tells me the conversation went like this:
Pitbull – “Greg, hey listen when me and Sensato play this new song tonight,
get some live video, then maybe after dinner we’ll go over to the Eiffel Tower
and shoot something in the street.”
Greg epitomizes one of the awesome possibilities of video DSLR shooting. Portability to feed spontaneity. Greg went on to tell me that he had never heard the song before and that he still doesn’t know what they’re saying.
In the end, it was just me hanging with a couple of very cool artists, having fun.
We also went back to Pit’s hotel room and did the balcony shot, with Paris in the
distance. I lit that with a floor lamp, defused with the window drape. I also got
some hilarious footage the next morning on the jet.
As usual, Ben Darling did the killer edit.
