Trailer Madness: Eclipse

March 11, 2010 by Movies, Trailers

The new trailer for “Eclipse,” the latest offering in the Twilight saga, has been released today. I know, I know, but check it — the film is directed by David Slade, he of the scary/excellent visual buffet that was “30 Days of Night.” He also directed “Hard Candy.” What? You haven’t seen “Hard Candy”? Shame on you. Go rent it immediately.

By all account Slade is a weird dude, but nobody can say he doesn’t know vampires.

Haven’t yet gotten your fill of upcoming blockbusters? The new trailer for “Tron: Legacy” has just been released.

Iron Man 2 Trailer

For anyone who hasn’t seen it yet, the new trailer for “Iron Man 2″ has just been released. I can’t tell you how much I’m looking forward to it. “Iron Man” is probably my favorite comic book movie of all time. Check it out:

Hollywood Wrap-Up — Oscar Edition

March 5, 2010 by Events, News

I feel like there’s something big happening in Hollywood this weekend…oh, right, it’s the 82nd Annual Academy Awards! You can’t blame me for momentarily forgetting. Everyone knows Mo’Nique is a lock for Best Supporting Actress and people may riot if Jeff Bridges isn’t recognized for his work in “Crazy Heart.” As for the heads-up battle between a certain multimillion-dollar blockbuster starring blue aliens and the Little Iraq War Movie That Could, the press has been trying hard to get us invested in the outcome, but so far it hasn’t worked. Both films are so radically different, in all aspects, that it’s virtually impossible to compare them. As for behind-the-scenes Oscar buzz, well, we all know that yesterday Sarah Palin and her entourage stormed the gift tent at the Kodak and made off with a bunch of free stuff. But believe it or not, there’s more Oscar coverage to be found, if you look hard enough…

Film Industry By the Numbers

Click twice on the photo at left to check out a really amazing graphic. It breaks down the 2009 domestic and worldwide box office revenue by various categories: rating, studio, audience demographic, etc.

A couple of interesting things to note? Only one Rated R film made it into the echelons of top-grossing movies, and that was “The Hangover.” Also, people went to the movie theater five times more often in 2009 than to amusement parks, and ten times more often than to sporting events.

Big Hurts for “The Hurt Locker”

March 3, 2010 by Awards, Movies

With the Oscars only a few days away, multiple newspapers and news outlets have dogpiled various criticisms upon “The Hurt Locker.” If you keep track of the complaints they get become pretty amusing. First The Los Angeles Times accused the film of portraying its subject matter insensitively and inaccurately. Now the story has broken that the makers of “The Hurt Locker” are being sued for allegedly basing its main character on a real-life man. In other words, the movie was too accurate.

Now, in a bizarre case of meta, journalists are starting to report on other journalists’ criticisms, and pointing out that a similar phenomenon happened last year with “Slumdog Millionaire,” which took a lot of heat for its alleged treatment of the children used in the film. In the event that “The Hurt Locker” doesn’t win Best Picture, look for all of these stories to instantly vanish. If it does win, look for the fervor to be ramped up even higher.
