Robin Schmidt Needs $10

November 29, 2010 by News

A lot of you read and enjoyed Robin Schmidt’s series of articles about his British TV pilot, especially the wrap up called “8 Things I’ve Learned From Shooting Long Form Drama on the 5D That I didn’t Know Before I Started“. He’s recently gained some notoriety on the intertubes with his comedy project called Super Massive Raver which is kind of a British rave version of Flavor Flav on crack who dispenses social pop commentary while hopping around like the energizer bunny. Robin is taking his production to Singapore and needs to raise some money for the travel expenses. He’s set up an IndieGoGo account and performed a 24 hour jokeathon on Ustream over the Thanksgiving holiday. All he’s asking is each contributor to donate $10:

We are running this campaign with only one level of perk: $10. That’s it. Same for everyone. Your perk is a free copy of the Super Massive Raver app and a limited edition hard copy of the episodes featuring an exclusive episode no-one else will get. Oh, and our eternal thanks of course. You will also be credited as a funder on the Super Massive Project website. Rave on.

If you enjoyed Robin’s writing here on PCN and/or learned something that helped you on a paying gig, please consider sending a little scratch his way.

For our part, PhotoCineNews will donate the proceeds from the sale of 2 DVD sets of the PhotoCine Expo 2010 DVD. So if you spend $199 for an 8 disc set jam packed with HDSLR goodness, you will be helping Robin on his SMR project. To buy the DVD and help Robin, use the contact form to tell us and include your paypal email address. We will send you a paypal invoice for the DVD set and shipping.

Shane Hurlbut Talks About Redrock Micro Man Cam Rig

November 16, 2010 by Gear

Shane Hurlbut ASC is always interesting to watch and listen to. He’s definitely a passionate guy as you know if you’ve ever seen him speak. At this year’s PhotoCine Expo, he crawled around the floor and jumped all over the place during his presentation – which you can catch on the Expo DVD.

This video was shot in conjunction with Shane’s HDSLR Bootcamp. The production values are as high as I’ve ever seen for a demonstration video and once again, Shane could read the phone book and make it interesting. Check out the Man Cam: … Continue Reading

HDSLR Dailies with Elgato Turbo.264 and Private Video Sharing Sites Pt. 2 Vimeo

November 12, 2010 by Editing

As I mentioned in part 1 of this article, your YouTube videos might not be viewable on mobile devices like the iPhone and iPad. For more flexible dailies, you will want to use the Plus version of Vimeo which costs $59 per year. There’s no auto upload Vimeo setting in the Elgato Turbo software so the workflow for Vimeo is a little different than the automated upload for YouTube. After adding your video clips, choose HD 720p from the pulldown format menu. You can choose HD 1080p but for dailies, it isn’t really necessary for viewing on an iPad or iPhone. You can see in this example that I added a folder of 12 clips. The new file takes the name of the first clip in the sequence, which is MVI_4603 in this instance. … Continue Reading

Cream with Your Coffee

November 10, 2010 by Commercials

Here’s some cream for your coffee, just don’t do a spit take. This video wasn’t shot on a DSLR (it was shot on film) but it’s a very cleaver ad spot that was photographed beautifully. Consider it inspiration. The behind the scenes video is worth a look as well. … Continue Reading

Matthew Duclos Dives into Micro Four Thirds

November 9, 2010 by Gear

Lens expert Matthew Duclos posted an interesting overview of the Micro Four Thirds system on his Circles of Confusion blog focusing on the broad spectrum of lenses available.

The flange depth of the M4/3 system is so short that most lenses (still and cine) will have plenty of room to add a mount adaptor in between the lens and the camera. For example, The flange depth of the M4/3 system is approximately 20mm where as PL mount flange depth is 52mm. That means that you have a HUGE space of 32mm to add a mount adaptor. . . . There are a slew of other options for using other lenses including but not limited to Eos, FD, Nikon F, Leica R, Leica M, M42, PL, PV, etc. etc… Pretty much anything with a flange depth greater than 20mm which is just about anything except for C-mount lenses.
