The question everyone is asking me lately is “should I buy the Canon 5D MKIII?” Of course you should, you deserve it – right? I think there are several good reasons to spend the money and an equal number of reasons not to upgrade depending on your situation. Lets start with the obvious upgrade candidate, someone who is mostly shooting HDSLR video.
Video seems to be one of the biggest reasons to upgrade on the new 5D. Noise, artifacts, ISO, dynamic range and compression have all been tweaked for better video performance. HDMI out no longer drops to SD when recording and if your only shooting video you can set the shutter button to start/stop video (this will allow you to use wired remotes connected to the R3 socket). The rolling shutter is also a bit faster so it should show less jello effect and the 12 minute recording limit has been changed to a maximum clip length of 29 minutes 59 seconds.
The audio recording capabilities have also been greatly improved. In addition to visual meters while recording and a headphone monitoring line out, the in camera recorder is now pro level with uncompressed PCM audio at 48 kHz. … Continue Reading
The Associate Press ran a piece this week entitled “Employers ask job seekers for Facebook passwords”. It tells of employers asking employee candidates for access to their Facebook profile either by password or by friending the Human Resources manager. This is not the first time that this has been reported. Their are a myriad of news accounts of employers asking for permission to snoop into potential employees’ Facebook pages as part of the hiring process. With this sort of reprehensible practice expanding it will only be a matter of time before Facebook becomes a garden of fluffy bullshit.
If you’ve watched a major sporting event in the last few years, you have undoubtedly seen the video portrait of an athlete on the screen while the announcer talks about his or her college, stats and accomplishments. The poor athlete stands there uncomfortably looking at the camera, listing back and forth ever so slightly until someone says smile which leads to a cut away back to the game. Okay, I’ll admit it. In this context the cheesiness works. But when I see a slightly more stylized version of the same thing deployed in other contexts it makes me cringe. … Continue Reading
This really isn’t our beat here at PCN, but this article from Patrick Rhone (& Wife) at Minimal Mac is so profoundly thought provoking that I had to share it with you all. Rhone’s wife elucidates on what Microsoft did to blow it in the recent era of iOS and Android.
I promise you, it’s not what you think.
And, as usual, my wife disagreed. She then laid down a thought so insightful, so deep, so damned perceptive, that it just about brought me to tears in its completeness.
Austin based Photographer Kirk Tuck has a pretty successful blog that I check in on every now and then. I like his conversational writing style and his pragmatic approach to photography. He has a new book out about using LED lights that sparked my interest. I’ve started paying a lot of attention to the new breed of LED’s that are currently hitting the market like the new Foton from PRG. The original crop of LED lights used off the shelf LEDs that were designed to glow in an instrument panel which didn’t need to throw light any real distance. This new crop of LEDs are designed for projecting light in pleasing patterns specifically for photo and video purposes. The market is maturing and even Chimera is making a soft box for LED light banks. For more info there’s a good article about LEDs over at HDVideoPro if you want to see what’s new.
