Everything you Wanted to Know about Lenses for HDSLR Cameras

September 10, 2010 by Expo, Workshops

On Saturday September 25th, “Everything You Wanted to Know About Lenses for HDSLR Cameras” will be presented at the PhotoCine Expo.
Lenses are one of the most important tools in a shooter’s toolkit. And potentially the most expensive. Photo Cine Expo has fielded a fantastic panel of lens experts to explain all the nuances of selecting the right lens, and answer your questions. Topics include the 5 important criteria for lens selection, which is better: zooms or prime lenses, understanding the advantages of cinema lenses, lens modifications, and options for adapting lenses to HDSLRs. Our panel is moderated by Brian Valente of Redrock Micro, and includes Rich Schleuning of Carl Zeiss, Paul and Matthew Duclos from Duclos lenses, and Illya Friedman of Hot Rod Cameras. … Continue Reading

More info on Zeiss CP.2

August 9, 2010 by Gear, Interviews

Jared Abrams put up a sneak peak of a video he shot for Cinema5D where he talks about the Zeiss CP.2 and the upcoming 100mm which according to Rich Schleuning, should be shipping in November. I’m not sure what a “sneak peak” is but keep an eye on the Cinema5D news section for the full video.

Richard Schleuning Talks About Zeiss CP.2 Lenses

August 2, 2010 by Interviews, News

Check out this video of my friend Rich Schleuning being interviewed at the ProFusion Video Expo in the frozen wastelands up north Canada. Zeiss makes some great lenses and the CP.2′s are groundbreaking with interchangeable mounts. After my experience interviewing with the iPhone at NAB 2010, far be it from me to criticize the quality of an interview but what’s up with the sound levels dropping as the camera moves away? Did the interviewer forget to turn on his hand held mic and the camera mic was used as a fallback? Im’ just say’in.

One might assume that a lens is a lens and you can simply adapt any lens to suit ones needs. This is usually a matter of changing or adapting the mount just so the square peg fits in the square hole. RED Killer ? ARRI Alexa Camera: Digital Cinematic Bliss – Arri alexa – Gizmodo

April 7, 2010 by Gear, News

500x_arricamnew.jpg It’s been called a RED Killer by some and it certainly might upset the apple cart but what it really is is a film killer. I won’t go into all the specs here becuse, let’s face it, the guys at Gizmodo have actually held one in their hands while I can only dream… Have a look at their whole article and go to tech heaven (link at end of article).

The big “reveal” at the invitation only DGA event was that it uses the Sony SxS 32 GB memory cards for storage (yes, 2 of them) and that the “memory” module is replaceable as memory technology improves. Oh, and it shoots directly into Apple ProRes 4-4-4 so that the files drop immediately into an editing workflow. Cool!

March 23, 2010 by Gear, Opinion

If you are looking for a lens adapter to shoot Leica M on a Panasonic GH-1, a Nikon lens on a Canon Camera, or any lens/camera combination you can come up with, Fotodiox seems like the place to go since they have pages and pages of adapters for medium format and 35mm lenses.. I first saw them mentioned in the comments section on Shane Hurlbut’s blog post called Still Lenses That Can Grace The Big Screen.
