Robotic Arms for HDSLR

January 31, 2012 by Gear

I came across this site called ServoCity after following a link to a PT785-S pan and tilt servo head. This looks like a very cool and affordable solution at $350 for the arm mechanism with plug and play wired remotes starting at $50 and a wireless controller for $80.

This precision, closed-loop system is designed to manipulate cameras/devices up to 6 lbs even though the entire head only weighs a super-light 1.8 lbs. Each axis can operate up to 400° of … Continue Reading

DSLR Audio Workshop in LA With Zoom H4N

February 16, 2011 by Audio, Events

I’ll be hosting a Audio for DSLR workshop at Samy’s Camera in LA on March 5th with Jeremy Ian Thomas. If you’re a long time reader you will recognize Jeremy’s name because I hire him to teach when ever I have an opportunity. He is a very engaging teacher and experienced Indie filmmaker who also works as a colorist/editor on big Hollywood projects. The last time he taught this audio workshop we had about 70 people and it was very well reviewed.

What was pretty cool is that Jeremy Thomas, the tutor, brought in one of his actors and shot a monologue right in front of the whole class and then showed step by step how the whole process goes, from ingestion, transcoding, importing to FCP and synching with Plural Eyes. Definitely an exciting, explicit and very effective way to teach, that the crowd reacted really well to!

All attendees present will be entered into a raffle to win a Zoom Q3HD video recorder. The workshop is $50 and takes place at the Samy’s Fairfax EDU building (next to the store) from 10AM-1PM.

Really Right Stuff Redrock Micro Adapter Plate

February 11, 2011 by Gear, News

I’m a big fan of the Really Right Stuff system and have been using it for years so I’m excited to see an adapter to use the RRS system on my Redrock Micro rigs:

The microRRS is an adapter plate for Really Right Stuff quick release plate and dovetail to be adapted to Redrock HDSLR rigs.

The microRRS adapts the Really Right Stuff clamp for camera or lens mounting, and puts the HDSLR at the proper cinema height for use with other rail-mounted accessories including mattebox, follow focus, etc.
This system also enables the use of the “L” bracket camera plates for vertical shooting. This system uses industry-standard 15mm/60mm spacing rails.

$7K RED Scarlet Dead

January 4, 2011 by Gear, News

It looks like the long delayed RED Scarlet is never going to be, at least in the prosumer chassis at the $7K price point. RED’s Jim Jannard made the announcement New Years day on the REDUSER.net forums.

1. We have moved from the less robust Scarlet S35 chassis to the EPIC S35 chassis (like going from the economy car frame to the truck frame). Pro, not prosumer.

2. We are trying to maximize the performance specs given the cost cutting from the hardware, … Continue Reading

Locking Mode Dial Modification for the 5D MarkII and 7D

December 10, 2010 by Gear, News, Tips And Tricks

One of the little improvements on the 60D that I really like is the locking mode dial and now you can have one put on your 5DMkII or 7D by Canon for $100.

Effective December 6, 2010, Canon will start to provide as a chargeable service, a locking mode dial modification for the “EOS 5D MarkII” and “EOS 7D” digital single-lens reflex cameras.

This modification is available, for a fee, to owners of these cameras who would prefer a Mode Dial which locks in place and can’t be accidentally moved during normal camera operation.

For USA residents, the pricing of the locking mode dial modification service for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D cameras has been set at $100 per camera as of December, 2010 – Canon Website

DSLR Video Rig Porn

October 28, 2010 by Gear

Check out this cool tumbler site dedicated to shots of DSLR video rigs. There are some pretty inspirational as well as wacky photos of video shooting rigs from around the intertubes.

One thing that caught my eye right away was this rig that uses a Calumet Mini Mono Pod as a support handle: … Continue Reading
