Not Finding Johnny Depp In Rural West England

January 20, 2011 by Short Film

Finding Johnny Depp is a delightful eight minute short created by a group of young British filmmakers. It won the Delabole Slate Audience Award at the 2010 Cornwall Film Festival.

It shows their haphazard and occasionally misguided efforts to follow up persistent rumours that megastar Johnny Depp lives in a luxury house somewhere in rural Cornwall, the south-western extremity of England that juts out into the Atlantic ocean, and is host to some of the country’s most spectacular coastal scenery and surfing beaches.

Snehal Patel Shoots a Music Video With Available Light

Snehal Patel sent me a link to this music video he shot with almost all existing light.

The story is that I called Samrat up while he was visiting LA and asked him if he wanted to make a music video in his spare time. This video was filmed by myself and international cinematographer Peter Holland. We used a Canon 5D on loan from Canon and nothing else. The only lighting we used was an Arri 300w in the apartment scene. Everything else was filmed with available light. I wanted to see how much the camera could be pushed. I wasn’t bothered by grain or noise in the image as long as the story was clear. There was no crew and no other equipment. Just the camera and an interesting idea.

Stills to Motion Transition Advice from David Darby ASC

October 8, 2010 by Interviews, News

David Harry Stewart put up a multi-part interview with Cinematographer David Darby ASC. In Part 4, David is asked about his path from stills to cinematography:

I said that telling my story was like describing my path over glaciers and crevasses while trying to find my own route up Mt. Everest, and that most of the ice-bridges I crossed on my journey had long since collapsed and were gone. The town had changed, the companies and production had changed, many people that were key players in my little drama had moved on to other aspects of the business or moved-on permanently; it’s a path that no one could even find today much less follow – David Darby ASC

He goes on to say:

Enter the HDSLR, and the Apple Computer. Enough said, I should think. With an HDSLR and Final Cut Pro in one form or another, I’d really have to wonder about somebody who couldn’t get the chops down in a lot less time, and without the whimsey of good fortune phone calls or tortoise-pace interference to hang you up. You should be screaming down the road with beautifully-shot spec spots that are at least nicely cut if not brilliantly so – David Darby ASC
