Big Hurts for “The Hurt Locker”

March 3, 2010 by Awards

With the Oscars only a few days away, multiple newspapers and news outlets have dogpiled various criticisms upon “The Hurt Locker.” If you keep track of the complaints they get become pretty amusing. First The Los Angeles Times accused the film of portraying its subject matter insensitively and inaccurately. Now the story has broken that the makers of “The Hurt Locker” are being sued for allegedly basing its main character on a real-life man. In other words, the movie was too accurate.

Now, in a bizarre case of meta, journalists are starting to report on other journalists’ criticisms, and pointing out that a similar phenomenon happened last year with “Slumdog Millionaire,” which took a lot of heat for its alleged treatment of the children used in the film. In the event that “The Hurt Locker” doesn’t win Best Picture, look for all of these stories to instantly vanish. If it does win, look for the fervor to be ramped up even higher.
