Nadia – the camera that does the thinking for you

November 8, 2010 by News

This is Nadia – a camera that doesn’t show you any preview of what you’re taking, but instead analyses the image for aesthetic quality and gives it a rating. It decides what’s a good shot, and what isn’t.

The bizarre science behind the largest camera in the world

July 9, 2010 by News

20100708-opera.jpgLeica don’t just make great cameras. They also contribute to the building of huge cameras too – including what’s described as “the largest camera in the world”, 1,400 metres below ground level at the CERN lab complex in Switzerland.

A project called Opera (no, not that Opera) has been underway for some years now, with the aim of observing the transformation of muon neutrinos into tau neutrinos. (No, I have no idea.)

These little beasties are so hard to find that they’re practically not there at all. They swish right through our planet at light speed. And the team of 150 physicists involved in the Opera project needed not just to see them, but see them doing their transformation trick. Apparently it’s quite something.

The lowest cost follow focus rig you may ever find for a VDSLR!

May 23, 2010 by News

Some people seem to have a lot of time on their hands to invent and create new ways of doing follow focus with VDSLR cameras. This guy (who doesn’t identify himself on his web pagesbut I’m inferring that he is Scott Lerman from his URL and the name of one of his products) has created two unique and decidedly low-tech ways to get follow focus with his 5D.

Canon to begin acquisition of the “.canon” Top-Level Domain name

TOKYO, March 16, 2010—Canon Inc. announced today that it will begin the acquisition process for the top-level domain name “.canon,” based on the new generic Top Level Domain (gTLD) registration system.

The non-profit organization ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which maintains and regulates the Internet’s addressing system, has rigorously evaluated the current gTLD string of characters’ societal value, utilization purpose, and use in an organization’s operations. At its International Public Meeting held in June 2008, however, ICANN approved the relaxation and liberalization of the new gTLD system adoption rules. Following this meeting, a number of disputes arose surrounding whether the entry procedures were fair and adequate, and it was expected that the new gTLD system would commence registration application within 2010 at the earliest. The new gTLD system is expected to allow a company name, brand name, geographic region, or service type to be used as a gTLD within website and e-mail addresses. (continued…)

Email your friends of demise, and other ways Webwill covers your online presence after you die.

February 26, 2010 by News

20100226-webwill.jpgEver wondered what’s going to happen to all your web stuff after you die? I wonder about it a lot, as it happens, perhaps more than is healthy for me.

But for people who have invested a lot in online content over a period of years, it’s a question worth asking. Short of making sure that a trusted friend or relative has secure access to all the up-to-date passwords for all the services you use on the internet, there is no obvious answer.

My Webwill is a new idea from Sweden – currently in beta only – that tries to solve the problem.
